Should We Seek Extra-Biblical Revelations?

Well-written article on a topic dear to my heart.  I do find it very interesting (but not surprising) how similar Roman Catholicism and Mormonism are in this respect (adherence to authority outside of Scripture), because any low view of Scripture will inevitably breed grievous error and heresy.

Original article here:  Should we seek extra-Biblical revelations?

Short answer:  No!

Longer answer:  "The whole counsel of God concerning all things necessary for his own glory, man's salvation, faith and life, is either expressly set down in Scripture, or by good and necessary consequence may be deduced from Scripture: unto which nothing at any time is to be added, whether by new revelations of the Spirit, or traditions of men . . ."   (Westminster Confession, chapter 1)

Beloved, although I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation, I found it necessary to write appealing to you to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints.  Jude 1:3

If we have the faith "once for all delivered to the saints", then why in the world would any additional revelation be needed?

Not only that, but 2 Timothy 3:16 states that Scripture is profitable for:

  1. Teaching
  2. Reproof
  3. Correction
  4. Training in Righteousness

All of these having the result that the man of God be:

  1. Complete
  2. Equipped for every good work

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.  2 Tim 3:16-17

No revelation outside Scripture can make you either more complete or better equipped for good works.  Those seeking revelation outside of Scripture clearly haven't mastered what is already provided inside Scripture.
